Non sempre ti amo, New York

New York City can be tough sometimes, and she might try to bring you down. She’s going to try many times. With the endless lines, the outrageous prices, the constant sirens and honking horns, the shops, restaurants, offices that are open 24 hours a day, the cab drivers always chatting on the phone and suddenly off duty or busy whenever it’s raining, snowing or hailing. And then the lights, those lights that are always on, and sometimes you just wish you had a switch to turn off the whole city for a minute or two. People walking fast while eating, typing on their Blackberries, sipping lattes from their Starbucks cups. People running, because you've got to run here not to be left behind. And it happens, because it will happen, that you feel cold and helpless, left out and abandoned. And then, there's one thing that NYC does to perfection: she makes you feel that you don’t make enough money. Even though you work like a dog to afford living in this place, the money will never be enough. Still, there are days where you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else on the planet. Those are the days when the rest of the U.S. turns Tea Party-red, while NYC stays Blue, the evenings when you need a last-minute wax at 3am, the days when Andrew Cuomo wins against Carl Paladino. Those October afternoons in Central Park when leaves turn autumn red, or the mornings in January when your front door is blocked by an immaculate wall of white snow. The hours you spend writing at a table of the “Pick Me Up" cafè  inspired by the people walking down the street. It's the day you realize that Sex & the City is so much nonsense and you open up your eyes and see the wonders that take place here. People still read books! And when someone bumps into you on the street, they smile at you, and then say sorry. Everything is always on time, splitting the second. When your meet someone’s eyes strolling down the street they wish you a good day! I love New York for many reasons: for the burgers at PJ Clarke's, for the deliveries 24/7, for the chess matches at Bryant Park and the exhibitions at the ICP. Because here almost everyone is gay, because with one train stop from Brooklyn I’m in Manhattan, because I can buy tacos in the middle of the night at the deli downstairs. Not long ago someone told me that after two years living in the City you become a New Yorker. I think I can call this town my own.
